Kids with Special Needs
If you child has any type of special needs, behavioral issues, learning disabilities, speech delays, etc., you must please let Susie or Cornelia know this in your message on the phone before you register them so that we can see if this is the right situation for them and for us. Because these are not private, one on one classes, in order for them to be able to take our group classes they will have to and must be able to listen, understand and take direction and be in a group setting. They will also have to be able to physically sit or hold on to the wall on their own and understand that they have to wait their turn. So, we cannot have them in class if they aren't able to wait for their turn and they swim off into the pool without being told to do so or keep getting out of the pool as this would disrupt the class and take away time from the other children that the teacher or teachers are working with at the time. They also can not be or become aggressive to the other children. If their behavior is going to take away from a teacher being able to work with their other students, we're sorry, but we may not be able to have them attend our classes.
We may have to do a trial class to see if we can keep them in the session when we first open in March or at the end of the summer in late August when the classes are smaller, but during our peak times we have 10-12 kids in a class and one teacher may have 2-3 students by themself. Even though we always have an adequate amount of teachers in a class, no matter what the size, when the classes are very full there's a lot going on and they are hectic ,noisy and they are not private lessons. If they are able follow instruction and all that we mentioned above, we would love to have them join us!
We have taught many children over the years with special needs, etc. and they have done great and learned how to swim.
Ear Tubes
If your child has ear tubes and needs to wear ear plugs that's okay with us! Just remind us their 1st day and we'll do our best to make sure the ear plugs stay in! The head bands they sell that cover their ears seem to also help keep the ear plugs in!
Language
For those parents wondering about kids who speak or understand languages other then English; we teach and have taught, many children, from all over the world. All the kids do great and they all do seem to understand no matter what language. We do a lot of demonstrating to show the kids what to do. They also learn by watching the other kids in their class and they all do just fine and they all learn to swim! We have taught children who were unable to hear and/or see us who mastered swimming!
We haven't had a problem with language yet and we've been doing this here in Miami for over 40 years.
Swimming is a universal language!
